UAAP Season 81 Judo: UST extends reign on the mats

The University of Santo Tomas extends their Judo reign at the conclusion of UAAP season 81.

University of Santo Tomas ended UAAP Season 81 in a dominant fashion as they were crowned overall champions in both men’s and women’s categories. The Espana-based judokas racked a total of six golds, nine silver and eight bronze medals during the two-day event.

After setting the tone in the first day, led by the likes of Dither Tablan and Khrizzie Pabulayan, the Tigers finished out strong. Russel Lorenzo and Ryan Benavidez continued the momentum by reigning over the -60 and -66 kilogram category. Lorenzo defeated University of the East’s Jed Pumay. Benavidez on the other hand, claimed victory via ippon over fellow Thomasian Thomas Huckstep.

Ateneo’s Rafael De Leon thwarted perennial contender Czar Bayas to secure the gold in the -73 kg division while University of the Philippines’ Sean Panganiban thwarted De La Salle’s David Gordon.

A pair of Iskos claimed gold at the women’s -63 and -78 class. Charisse Aseneta and Justine Main were victorious opposite Jamaika Ponciano and Aithana Carranto. In addition, UE’s Sharlene Guyo defeated UST’s Bernadette Carpio to take home the -70 kg title.
